Metaphor

Metaphor

Using a Metaphor is the best way to describe and compare a person to nature. Or a person to an animal. There are different ways to use a metaphor. A metaphor is used to describe something by using something else. For example, " She is the sun". This can be describe as a metaphor because I'm comparing her to the sun.I'm comparing her to the sun because the sun is bright and it shines so I'm using the sun to resemble her because she shines just like the sun. In poems metaphors are one of the main literary techniques that are used. There are different type of metaphors.

Another type metaphor is a simile. Which compares two things by using like or as. For an example "He is mean like the Grinch" This can be describe as an simile because I'm comparing how the Grinch acts mean and how he acts means so therefore I'm saying they act just alike.

Another metaphor is Personification. Personification is giving human qualities to animals or objects. For example by using a poem written by "The Mountain". "The mountain sat upon the plain In his eternal chair, ". This can be describe as personification because she gave an object which is the mountain an human qualities which would be "sat upon the plain, in his chair eternal chair." That's the correct way to use personification in a poem.

Another metaphor is Anthropomorphism. Which is use with god or gods. It is this device gives human forms or qualities to an entities which are not human. In this example I took a quote from Emily Dickinson poem called "chart less." In her quote it states " "I never spoke with God, Nor visited in Heaven;". This can be describe as anthropomorphism because she use god in her poem as she gave human entities which was her self.

Hyperbole is another type of metaphor that is use when a person exaggeration a situation. for example " I'm so mad I could punch through a wall right now". This can be use an hyperbole because I exaggerate the situation by saying I can punch through a wall, which everyone knows is impossible.

Another metaphor is parable. Which is like a metaphor that has been extended to form a brief, coherent fiction. Parable basically is a brief, succinct story, in prose or verse, that illustrates a moral or religious lesson. For an example "The parable of the Good Samaritan" This can be describe as a parable because The parable of the Good Samaritan was written by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke (10:25-37). The story was basically about a Jewish traveller is beaten, robbed, and left half dead along the road. First a priest and then a Levite come by, but both avoid the man. Finally, a Samaritan comes by. Samaritans and Jews generally despised each other, but the Samaritan helps the injured Jew. Jesus is described as telling the parable in response to a question regarding the identity of the "neighbour" which Leviticus 19:18 says should be loved. This story can be use as parable because its a verse that illustrates a moral or religious lesson.

There is also a metaphor call fable. Which is a succinct story, in prose or verse, that features animals and nature. For an example Nature, in the broadest sense, is equivalent to the natural world, physical world, or material world. "Nature" refers to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. It ranges in scale from the subatomic to the cosmic. This can be use as a fable because Its a verse about how nature is describes.

Another type of Metaphor is animism. Which is like a philosophical, religious or spiritual idea that souls or spirits exist not only in humans but also in animals, plants, rocks, natural phenomena such as thunder, geographic features such as mountains or rivers, or other entities of the natural environment. For an example Hinduism. I can use Hinduism as animism because Its the predominant and indigenous religious tradition. Which is an idea that did come from a spirit human in Hindu named Sanātana Dharma.

Another type of metaphor is Analogy. Analogy is the comparison of two pairs which have the same relationship. For an example "Day is to minute as month is to hour." This can be descirbe as analogy because even though they are different they have an comparising which gives them the same relationship.

As I was reading Dylan Thomas poem call "THE FORCE THAT THROUGH THE GREEN FUSE DRIVES THE FLOWER". I noticed The different kind of metaphors that he used in his poem. For example when he stated "The force that through the green fuse drives the flower Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees Is my destroyer." This can be describe as a metaphor because he comparing the force of nature and the life force within flowers and tress. Also the life force that flows through humans. Throughout his poem he basically gives a relationship between nature and humanity.

There is another poet name Robert Herrick that use many metaphors to describe how his mistress was very important to him. His poem was called "A Meditation for his Mistress". In his poem he state "You are the queen all flowers among". This is a metaphor that he use to describe how he felt and saw his mistress. He compared his mistress to a queens and flowers as well. Robert Herrick used metaphors to show what he thought about his mistress and compare her to all these lovely things.

Emily Dickinson was another poet who use several of metaphors to describe her feelings and how she looked at situations. In one of her poems called "The mountain". In this poem she says "The mountain sat upon the plain In his eternal chair". In this quote she used personification by giving an mountain an human qualities which would be "The mountain sat upon the plain In his eternal chair". That's how Emily Dickinson used personification in one of her poem. Another poem she wrote was "I'm Nobody! Who Are You?". In this poem she used an different type of metaphor besides personification. In her poem she states "How public, like a frog". In this poem she use simile to compare an frog to public by using like. There are different ways you can use metaphors in poems and in stories to compare two things.

Another poem that Emily Dickinson wrote with An Metaphor in it was "Beclouded". In her poem she states "The sky is low, the clouds are mean". This is a certain type of metaphor which would be personification. This is personification because she gave a cloud an human quality by saying that the cloud is mean. A cloud cant be mean but it is a human quality that she had gave that cloud. So that makes personification.

By reading Emily Dickinson, Robert Herrick and Dylan Thomas poems I noticed and learn alot of things. I learned different ways you can use different type of metaphors. I also learn the unique of metaphors and the true meaning of why poets use metaphors in their writing.

As I contuine reading poem with metaphors I have a better understanding how to use and fine metaphors in poetry. In this quote it states "loneliness (a leaf falls)". This is a metaphor because the poet is comparing loneliness to a leaf thats falling. When a leaf falls it mostly falls slow and lonely onto the ground. So the poet is saying loneliness is just like an leaf falling of the tree. This is a good metaphor because its comapring an humanity to nature.

Metaphors work in my life everyday. Either im being compare or Im comapring something. Or Im going through something that can be describe as a metaphors. An metaphor I would use to explain my daliy life is A Roller Coaster - Life consists of ups and downs, and we are along for the ride. This can be desbribe my life cause everything doesnt always go good for me but everything doesnt always go bad either. Either way I go along with it and do what I got to do for my self.
