Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale had a great history legacy some people agree others don't agree. As I was reading his biography written by his great great niece I learn how much courage he had for his country and how he got there. When I was reading his story his niece talked about how his father was a Deputy. Been a Deputy in the old Connecticut Assembly. Hale grew up being known and the ladies seem to always like him. Nathan decided that he wanted to be a schoolteacher. He always cared about others and was very generous. He came From being a teacher to Lieutenant in Webb's Seventh Connecticut. His passion was to fight for his country, he had so much courage and faith. He wasn’t scared of anything that had to do with fighting for the country. When he entered the war and came home for the winter he had been engaged to a women name Alicia Adams. He was captain at that time he also was 21 years of age.

By this time he already had prove his courage and his commitment to his country. He was asked to be a spy because the job to him was necessary. In the story it state ""He didn't make such a bad spy, after all. He got what he went after, and hid the drawings in his shoes. He was on his way back, crossing their lines, when they caught him. They found the information on him. He admitted he, was over there to spy. You know what a spy gets. They hanged him in the morning. He wrote some letters to the family at home, but they were destroyed before his eyes, they say. But in his last moment, they let him say what he wanted to. And later one of their officers told one of our officers what he'd said.” By this quote it showed his courage that he had because even though he knew what will probably happen if he would have admitted that he was a spy he didn't care he said it with proud and was ready to die for his country. When he was being a spy he had to dress up as an Dutch schoolmaster. He kept all his information in his shoes but of course he got caught one day and that's why he died at the age of 21. He died and got caught on his first biggest job he ever had. He didn't get a chance to get married or to have kids and he gave up all of that to fight for his country and that takes a lot of courage.

I think he is a hero because half of the people in the world wouldn't think about putting a whole country before their life. He had enough courage to die with pride and dignity. Also in the story it state "'I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." This quote proves that Hale didn’t even regret that he died for his country. Which demonstrates that he had courage and he took pride into his job, and he would do it again if he had the chance.

If I was in a similar situation as Hale I would of done the same thing. Just because of the fact that I would be commented and had took pride & courage into my job. Just like Hale did. I also would be confuse and stress because it’s also a lot to do as well. Being under pressure with being a spy then a lot worries probably comes with that. It’s a lot to cover. The only difference is I probably would have some regrets as far as me dying. I would of lied about being a spy just because I only live once and I would never be ready to die.

Nathan Hale also had negative things said about him after his death. In the story it states "Nothing was more American in Hale than his taking on the duties that led to his death. It was a dirty job, spying. Nobody wanted it. He took it. There's something about that, taking on a dirty job that's got to be done, that rings a bell. It's an American custom of American heroes, He wasn't a remarkably articulate boy. His letters are nothing special. He just jotted things in his diary. But he because the spokesman for young American fighting men who have to die for their country. He chanced to say the thing they think; the thing they mean, when there's not even a split second to think. He stood there at Turtle Bay on Manhattan Island. Don't think he declaimed. He wasn't that kind. He had those few moments, and he was thinking about all the different things that were ending for him. He said and I think it was more like a remark. "I only regret..." This statement shows the negative side of Nathan that people tends to forget. It kind of proves how he had second doubt about dying for his country and that he does have an regret. This statement doesn't change my opinion about him being an hero. Because I still think he was a hero, all because he had second doubts or regret something doesn't change the fact he still died with the pride he had for his country. He fought and he should get the credit for doing that and being as brave as he did. Majority of population wouldnt be close to picking a country over their life. So with that we should be understandable. Everyone has a bad side to them.
