The Fight

The Fight

Richard Nathaniel Wright was a American author who wrote controversial novels, short stories and non-fiction. Most of his writings was about racial themes. Richard was born September 4,1908 on Rucker Plantation in Roxie, Mississippi. He lived with his mother until she became ill in 1914 "The Fight" By Richard Wright was about the kind of kid that didn't like to be picked on. He knew that he always had to stand up for himself to earn respect. He basically cared about what other people thought and care about how he would spend the rest of the year in that school. He needed to know that he wouldn't be looked at funny and no one would tease or bully him. So he fought the first day to prove to himself and others that he can fight for what he believed in. A character trait I would use for Richard would be strong. I picked strong because if he had to fight the whole school to prove that he can stand up for himself he probably would. That's being strong because one person against a crowd usually would scare a person off. Another character trait I would describe him as immature as well. Even though he wanted to prove himself it's always a time for anything and having a fight in school just because he felt like he need to prove himself to boys he don't know is very immature.

In Richard's situation he fought and lead the fight on because other boys encouraged it and also because he felt like he had to prove himself so he won't get picked on. Richard even wanted to fight after school when the fight got broken up, which proved he got carried away with trying to prove himself to the other boys. He also had a weapon on him to fight the boy which was a ring. He fought as if he was fighting for his life.

I disagree with Richard's actions because he should of waited for a right time to prove him self. He could have gotten suspended or kicked out for that matter cause he used an ring as a weapon. He risked his position in school to prove himself to people who don't care about him. He could have waited after school to fight the boy unless the boy touched him first but he didn't so it was no good reason why he fought the way he did in school. He shouldn't even want to prove himself to the boys so they could be friends because if you have to fight to make friends then they truly not his friends to begin with.

If I was in Richard's situation I would not have reacted the way he did just to make friends or to prove my self. I personally don't care what people think so if a group of girls would of try that I would have said I don't have time for that and if there really is a problem then something can be done. If the girl decided to hit me then I reacted but if she just talking then I will walk away and talk to the principal and tell him the problem. In the short story the boy really didn't do anything as far as touching him first he was just talking. It was really Richard who started it because he pushed him first when an boy pushed the bully into Richard. That wouldn't have happened if he would have walked away in the first place, which that would have been the main thing I did in that situation because in my eyes it wasn't that serious. I don't need to prove my self to no one to get respect because my personality tells it all enough for respect to happen already. As for Richard that wasn't the case.

Richard's Situation is very similar to this girl in middle School. Her name was Latoya. She was getting bullied on her first day of school and she felt like she had to make a point, so she hit the girl first and then used a weapon which was a book to hit the girl. In Richard's case he used a ring. After the incident was over I talked to her in the main office and I asked her why she hit the girl first and then hit her again with the book. Her respond was "So they won't pick on me I had to prove myself to them so later on in the school year they could be my friends and I won't have any problems. I have alot of friends". That is sort of how Richard looked at the situation as well. I don't agree with it but everyone is different.

Richard's actions was inappropriate to be in school. In the story it states "Somebody, eager and afraid that we would not fight, pushed the boy, and be bumped into me. I shoved him away violently." This quote shows that he pushed the boy first he fed into the trouble that he knew for an fact that the boys were trying to cause. That shows he is to easy to influence. If he was in my high school which is west side high school he would of got kicked out because that behavior was very inappropriate. The principal would see it as inappropriate because there should be no reason why anyone is fighting in school. An person gets kicked out if they don't throw the first hit because it's responsible to get out that situation before it even get to being physical. Plus In Richard's case his motive and actions would have gotten his self kicked out the school and the reason why he did it wouldn't have been worth it. So his actions was inappropriate.
